The Greater Manchester town of Oldham lies between the River Irk and the River Medlock. It is located about 5 miles south east of Rochdale and less than 7 miles from Manchester City centre. Historically the town was in Lancashire, its growth being due to textile manufacturing. In the middle of the 19th century the town held its own race meetings; initially a 2 day military meeting on Monday 3rd and Tuesday 4th March 1851 on fields at the edge of the town towards Manchester. The opening Garrison & Hunt Stakes was won by Captain Maynard’s Springy Jack beating Brewer. Many of the other races had a military link, either by the race name or the jockey’s connection with the armed forces. A final 2 day meeting ended on Tuesday 29th March 1853 with the concluding Selling Steeplechase going to Frederick Jerome owned by Mr Moab. |
